Cable is Australia’s battery-backed electricity company. We deliver "firm" electricity supply—the same price, 24/7, bespoke to each customer—at 20–40% lower cost than incumbents. We achieve this by installing a fully-funded and managed behind-the-meter battery coupled with our own in-house software stack, built from the ground up with the distributed energy future in mind.

Our solution has a structural cost advantage over legacy electricity retail models. We're building the energy company of the future, designed for a distributed, decarbonised electricity system.

Cable is at an inflection point. We’ve crossed the line from audacious idea to operating electricity retailer. We’re rapidly iterating on a state-of-the-art platform built to beat the incumbents. It already serves real residential and commercial customers. And now we’re ramping up. We’re building an era-defining energy company here. As one of our earliest engineers, you’ll define how Cable works, what it can become and how far we go.

We're an AI-native company. Engineers, energy specialists and go-to-market colleagues all use AI tools to build and ship. We're looking for exceptional engineers to own meaningful products end-to-end and create the agent-driven development platform that supports the whole team to ship excellent software.

What you'll do

Own a substantial part of Cable. Take responsibility for meaningful products and capabilities within an AI-native utility company. Work through the commercial problem and customer experience, into product design, interface craft, data modelling, backend architecture and security—and stay close to how your decisions perform in the real world.
Build with agents as a core part of your craft. Scope and coordinate work across coding agents, manage the context they require, and apply your engineering judgment to the results. Keep improving how you build as the tools evolve, turning successful approaches into workflows the team can reuse.
Help the whole team build. Our energy specialists and go-to-market colleagues are hands-on builders too. Work alongside them to turn deep domain knowledge into working software. Develop the agent-driven development platform that helps colleagues take product ideas into production with increasing independence and confidence.
Shape the engineering foundations as we grow. Bring care and judgment to architecture, software quality, security and resilience. Make deliberate decisions about where to invest, what to keep simple and what can evolve later, delivering software suited to our stage and the consequences of getting it wrong.
Work on deep energy and data problems. Build systems that turn high-volume metering, market and weather data into useful products and operational decisions. Work with our energy specialists to understand the underlying economics and make sure the software reflects how the business actually works today and how it will evolve.

Our stack

We're building a serverless system with TypeScript, React and Postgres, with agentic AI tooling running our development workflows. You'll build on an established foundation and have meaningful influence over how the architecture and development platform evolve.

About you

Excitement: We're doing our life's work and want to work with colleagues who are as excited about Cable as we are.
Experience: You have 3+ years of experience shipping software in a leading startup or a larger company with high engineering standards.
Expertise: You understand the modern full-stack software stack deeply and can take a product from an ambiguous problem through to a well-designed interface and reliable underlying systems.
AI-native: You recognise AI tooling as a fundamental way of working, coordinating work across multiple coding agents. You actively improve your workflows and are excited to push the frontier of what these tools make possible.
Engineering judgment: You care about good software and take responsibility for its quality in production. You know when a decision needs careful design, when a simple solution is enough, and how to keep a system understandable and resilient as it grows.
Ownership and adaptability: This is a foundational role. We're building out the platform while we roll it out, learning and iterating in increasingly short feedback cycles. You're comfortable making decisions with incomplete information, adjusting as you learn, and taking responsibility for what you ship. You'll help shape Cable products and the way the team builds them.
Bonus expertise: Experience with large-scale time-series data, billing or accounting systems, or transactional data models.
